Thoughts on a Benjamin Franklin Quote_07/01/26

“Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.” – Benjamin Franklin

As I work through my finances, this quote seems very appropriate. In my effort to become a better steward of what the Lord has blessed me with, the little expenses reveal habits not considered before. This quote compels me to consider what a want is and what a need is. I do believe God leaves room for us to get some things we want. However, at what expense? Do we go above and beyond what is a godly want?

Listen, I am not where I want to be. However, I am not where I need to be either. It is a work in progress. I realize that the most challenging aspect for me right now is seeing how many foolish mistakes I have made. It is said that “Hindsight is 20/20.” Would I have been ready so many years ago if this information had been presented to me? I will say there were times when it was mentioned to me that I should evaluate my spending. Did I pay attention? No, I did not.

I am at a place now where I choose to pay attention because I want different things. And honestly, these little expenses are getting in the way. Accepting accountability and making different choices push me forward to my goal of being a good steward. One of the Scriptures that resonates is 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Working on this compels me to take it to heart.

God bless you, and be encouraged.

All we can do is learn and improve. Personal finance is one of those areas where it’s never too late to start.

Kudos on your walk, Sandra! Another saying (often attributed to Benjamin Franklin): Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves. Health and finances both benefit by paying attention to the little details. Thank you for today’s encouragement!

I appreciate your responses, Grant. Thanks for reading. Quick question, who is the original author?

I’m not sure, but have heard many times it is Franklin.
