This definition begins with “the quality or condition of being a specified person or thing; individuality; personality. Includes identification. What to think about this word? What is my identity? Is it based on what I do, my gender, my degree, or my being? My soul?
When thinking of the identity of yourself, what influences your thoughts about being you? I can say I am female. I am second eldest of eight siblings. I graduated first in my high school class. I went back to school late in life. I have four children with more four plus years between each of them. I am divorced. I spent most of my motherhood as a single parent. I have a child that is not with me but with her dad. Does this make me who I am?
More than all of this, I am a child of God. None of the criteria listed above is what truly describes me. They are roles that I have in this life. I can say I have faith, resilience, tenacity, compassion, as well as intelligence. Will this identify me with Christ when He returns? The only thing that will truly identify me when Christ returns is my faith that He is the Son of God. He died and rose that I might have eternal life. He is my Lord and Savior.
The foundation of our identity is based on our Creator. This is my belief. Some may agree, some may not. Free will choice here. I know that I am not perfect. Still trying to figure some things out and you would think that at this age, it would be clear. Not. Because I have faith and trust the Word, I know that my thoughts are not His thoughts and my ways are not His ways. Therefore, in the grand scheme of things, I choose to believe that my identity is in Christ my Savior. The rest, my dear friends, is a work in progress.
Although the physical possessions are mentioned, even more so the experiences are just as relevant. Sometimes we miss that what we go through is not who we are as well. Thank you for reading.
Barbara Fisher – California – Hello there. My name is Barbara Fisher and I am a new on the blogosphere. I have thought about doing this for sometime as I can be very opinionated about things and sometimes too much for Facebook. I am a married and the mother of two adult children, and the grandmother of seven. I am a Christian and have recently just moved my membership to a Reformed Baptist Church. Truth be told! Our identity is not in what we own, but who we are in Christ alone.
